우리 나라의 과학자 중에서 학술연구 또는 저작이 매우 우수하여 학술 발전에 현저한 공로가 있다고 인정된 자에게 수여하는 제도로서 1954년부터 2008년까지 54회에 걸쳐 총 204명이 수상하였다.
수상자에게는 상장과 메달 그리고 상금이 주어지게 되며 수상자의 선정은 국내외의 학술단체나 학술원 회원의 추천을 받아 심사위원회를 구성, 부문별 심사와 종합심사를 거쳐 총회의 인준으로 최종 확정된다.
